Informed opinion from our knowledgable staff and key customers ... Powerbar 80% Protein Plus RecoveryAny well structured training programme, designed to give an athlete continued progressive improvement should be created to maximise recovery potential. The emphasis is all about quality; quality training workload, quality recovery and quality nutrition. You don't want those gains that you have worked tirelessly towards going to waste; if you put out quality in your workouts you must put quality products back into your body. Powerbar recovery shakes are the most convenient, fastest acting products available on the market. Protein content is a mixture of milk and whey to give fast and slow acting protein to give both immediate impact and a sustained supply to the body. Mixes incredibly easy into milk (unlike other products on the market) and has a very low fat content (again, unlike many other products), ensuring that you only add lean muscle and not fat. One look at Powerbar's sponsored athletes such as Haile Gebrselassie or Michael Phelps and you will see that they help create great athletes. It comes in some great flavours, Lion Crisp being surprising delicious. Ask in store for other flavours, or for more details on the Powerbar range. Review by Jonathan, 2011 Nike Lunarglide +
he question everyone's asking is exactly just how revolutionary is Nike's 'revolutionary new shoe'? The Lunarglide takes up the challenge of being a suitable running shoe for a wide range of runners, adapting to different gaits to provide optimal support. No other company has attempted this difficult task before, structured trainers have a fixed, non-adaptable support level and neutral trainers have no support for bio-mechanically efficient runners. So how does this shoe bridge the gap and how successful is it in doing so? In short, Nike have done a pretty good job. Nike's dynamic support system essentially uses its incredibly lightweight lunarfoam material to create a shoe which is built up under the medial side of the shoe, giving an over-pronated foot the support it needs whilst not remaining firm enough to effect the gait of neutral of under-pronated runner. Sounds simple but is very difficult to pull off, luckily Nike have chosen the correct materials and assembled them in such a way that it actually works. Nike claim that the shoe gives the same level of support as their structure Triax trainer (moderate support). In reality this is not the case. During gait analysis they do stack up pretty well, but personally I would only treat and sell this shoe in terms of support as a mild support shoe, not quite as high as maybe Nike had aimed, but it is still a testament to what they have achieved. They ride brilliantly, thanks to the lunarfoam midsole which is soft and springy. The ride is helped by the weight of the shoe, or rather lack of it, which for a training shoe makes them feel fast. They certainly aren't a high mileage, substantial trainer; for a trainer that you can run in day in day out you will have to look else where. However, for a trainer for the faster/shorter runs, tempo or maybe for race day at a half-marathon they are ideal. They might look a touchy gimmicky with their distinctive bright green sole (pink for the ladies) but they are anything but. They won't revolutionise the running shoe industry at the minute, but they are still a great trainer which I can honestly recommend, it certainly will be interesting to see how Nike can improve on this new take on running shoes in the future, they might well be onto something good... Gosforth ParkThere are some great routes using 'Gossy Park' on WalkJogRun Jesmond DeneThe Dene is a hidden gem for runners. It is situated in the East side of Newcastle in a narrow, steep-sided valley. There are plenty of routes depending on which of the many intertwining paths you take which can take you through narrow tunnels, over old bridges, up steep climbs and past the idyllic waterway of the Ouse Burn. The Dene is a rural environment within an urban landscape and is a great retreat for many locals wishing for a bit of peace and as such is a great place to run your stress away. Newcastle Town MoorThe town moor is a great place to run, situated just over a mile from the centre of the city. It has plenty of flat, well laid paths for a high quality speed work session. It is well lit so winter running can be accommodated. The best use of the space is a tough interval session between the many lampposts, or perhaps a hill rep session over the two 'mounds' found there. Just be careful of the cows in the warmer months, they don't like to be shifted! Newcastle-Gateshead QuaysideThe Newcastle-Gateshead quayside has seen a massive rejuvenation over recent years and is the home to a few of the region's most famous landmarks. From the infamous Tyne Bridge whereby year on year thousands of runners competing in the Great North Run run across with the Red Arrows flying overhead. To the Millenium Bridge which is situated right next to old Baltic Flour Mill now converted in a contemporary centre for art. There is plenty to see here for the local runners and riders. A casual jog along the riverside underneath the many bridges or an interval session between the landmarks, this area is perfect for a quick dinnertime run.
