Meet our staff

Matthew is the new manager of the Headingley store. Over the last few years Matthew has spent time training in Kenya as a sponsored athlete. He has experienced training at the highest level, but strongly believes in the inclusive nature of running, jogging & walking. Matthew has run the half marathon in 65 minutes & is no slouch when it comes to other distances up to the marathon. He has represented Great Britain in the marathon. Feel free to ask him on any training tips.

James has worked for Up&Running for over 2 years, initially in the Leeds store before moving up to Headingley in late 2011. He plays rugby for Wharfedale RUFC in National 1 and has represented Yorkshire at U20 level and this is where most of his training time is dedicated. He is also a member of Leeds/Bradford tri club, particularly enjoying the non-impactive swim sessions as he gets older! He also enjoys shorter running races, either road or trail. Favourites include the Golden Acre Relays and the Hyde Park Summer Mile. James' favourite kit are the Brooks Glycerin and Ravenna and the Skins A400 range.

Informed opinion from our knowledgable staff and key customers ...

SUB 4 Capri

I am really happy with these - they are a great material and feel really supportive, unlike others I have had they don't ride up onto the knee and keep me cool as I run.
The pocket on the back is a good size and useful for a few gels and keys.
Black leggings are always a staple in my running wardrobe because they go with everything and are good for most conditions, i would definitely recommend these to anyone looking - a versatile piece of kit of good quality.

SUB 4 Waist Pouch

The SUB 4 waist pouch is great, it's the perfect size for all my run essentials (gels, phone mp3 and keys) and does not chaff like others that I have tried, I think because it's flush to the body it does not bounce up and down as much as bum bags I have tried in the past.
The two separate pockets give me confidence that if a gel pops it wont take my phone down with it!
The inbuilt pocket inside is the perfect size for my mp3 player and stops it from moving around it the pouch.

Inov-8 X-Talon 212

This is one of Inov8's more minimalist off-road shoes, and gives those runners who want a lightweight shoe capable of gripping on uneven, wet and muddy surfaces a brilliant option.
To start with I only used this in my shorter races as I was uneasy with the little cushioning these offered, but am now so confident in them that I wear them for fell races over 10 miles. They offer a snug fit thanks to the polyurethane (TPU) uppers, and thanks to the sticky rubber used on the outsoles they grip where most other shoes wouldn't dare! This would be a great shoe for someone wanting to try an off-road shoe featuring a low-profile foot position, and great for those doing races due to the snug fit and small weight.

Mizuno Wave Rider 14

This was my first Mizuno highly cushioned shoe and it did not disappoint.
This shoe offers a wide, spacious forefoot and yet leaves the foot still feeling very secure and supported.
The new lacing holds the heel very securely, coming up quite high.
The cushioning gives a responsive ride and yet still provides good shock attenuation.
There is nothing worse than putting a shoe on and feeling it is completely separate to the foot - heavy and clumpy cushioned, nut the Wave Rider is the opposite of this, it feels like an extension of my foot.
I wear orthotics and they fit nicely.

Saucony Kilcenny XC

Fast becoming one of the more popular models on the cross-country racing circuit, these slim fit spikes are just like Mr Kipling's cakes - exceedingly good! With space for 6 spikes, these shoes offer great grip for those muddy days (I tend to leave 15mm spikes in as Yorkshire gets its fair share of rain in the winter). Weighing just 187g you hardly notice them on your feet, and with breathable mesh uppers your feet don't overheat. I also use these as a training spike for my grass sessions, and have used it on the track as well for some of our longer sessions.

Asics Numbus 12

I think I like this shoe because I am predominantly a fore foot striker and this shoe has maximal forefoot cushioning, the lacing makes the forefoot fit variable and the upper feels moulded to my foot. The higher arch in the shoe makes it feel supportive in the mid foot. With my orthotics fitting well.

Hilly Compression socks

You may look a bit silly wearing them, but you'll be the last one laughing as you can train consistently day after day using these. Although these are a compression garment, they don't feel restrictively tight, but don't let that put you off. I've tried a number of different brands to try and find something to help my sore calves, and these were the first ones I tried which worked, and also didn't roll back down my calves halfway round my run! Available in white and black, they can be worn underneath tights in winter as they come as a whole sock rather than just a calf guard. They are also one of the more reasonably priced compression socks on the market, so it may be worthwhile investing in a couple of pairs.

Brooks Adrenaline ASR 7 Womens

I bought this shoe before I went out to France as I know I was going to be doing some trial running. Normally I wear orthotics but I only have one pair and knew that my orthotics might be a bit worse for wear for my evening track sessions if I had hammered them off road. So the support shoe did the trick it was nicely versatile fitting the bill well for me, I was able to use it on gravely paths, with them offering me a good amount of cushioning but also further off road with good grip and they have lasted so well!

Groundhog socks

I bought some brilliant ground hog socks from your store recently.
I was suffering terribly from blisters which meant that I couldn't run more than a couple of miles and was in a lot of pain.
I had consulted many specialists in both podiatry and physiotherapy and no one could give me any satisfactory solutions or exercises which would help.
On the off chance I dropped by the Up & Running Headingley shop on the way home and mentioned my blister problems to Laura, I was recommended these socks and haven't looked back since! (apart from to buy more!)

Buffs

Over winter Buffs are essential to keep my ears warm while running, I hate wearing hats because I overheat after the first bit of my run and want to take it off. The Buff is a great alternative.
In summer it keeps the sweat out of your eyes, useful in spinning classes too.

Timex Tap

The best watch I have ever bought! it does everything you could want a watch to do. I originally bought it for the tap function (to start or take a split you just tap it) when you are mid session and fatigued this is such a bonus not having to find a button (makes my splits quicker too - great for an ego boost).
But it offers so much more, e.g. the watch can tell you when to drink or take on a gel so I set it while I am at work to beep every 45 mins to drink so I am hydrated.
It has great interval timers that you can set it to tell you what to do at various time intervals i.e. at the moment I press start and it says 'warm' (warm up) that last 10 minutes, then it flashes 'fast' and beeps this lasts 3 minutes then 'med' (medium) 2 minutes, etc...
It also helps me with pace judgement i.e. if I want to run a 400m rep in 63 I can tell my watch this then when I get to 400 if I tap my watch it will beep quick if I am ahead of pace and slowly if I am behind pace flashing up on the screen how far off pace I am.

Brooks Womens Defyance 3

Perfect rigid neutral shoe for orthotics, because it is developed from their GTS the last makes it nice and stable, my foot feels so secure.
