| Nick Rose is well known in Bristol,
mostly thanks to his long and successful career as one of Britain's
greatest runners. Not only has Nick competed twice at the Olympics,
taken Bronze in the World Cross Country Championships and Silver in
the Commonwealth Games but he also still holds the British record
for the Half Marathon, with a time of 61.03. His love of running led
him to the USA for several years, where he was able to focus on running
as a career - in which he was incredibly successful. He returned to
England in 1984 and settled in Bristol with his wife Christine, and
their two children. His passion for the sport has continued and whilst
Nick still occasionally competes, his involvement in the running community
has gone beyond his own achievements, with much of the last 15 years
being devoted to coaching young athletes. |
Rick has been running for over 20
years and is well known on the local running scene as coach, team
manager and competitor for local clubs Westbury Harriers and Bristol
& West AC. During his running career he has enjoyed success in
winning the National Veterans Road Relay title with Westbury Harriers
and whilst in Germany winning 5K and 10K titles and the German half
marathon team championships. He continues to compete and works with
youngsters to encourage and support their interest in the sport. |
Sarah is manager of the store and
has been running competitively for 12 years. She started out racing
at school events and was spotted by Nick Rose and Harry Clayton, who
thereafter coached her as part of Bristol AC. The girls team was highly
successful, both in cross country and track, winning several regional
and national championships. Individually, Sarah won several County
and Midlands championships and twice gained podium positions at the
English Schools Championships. Having attained a degree at the University
of Bath, she then accepted a two year Cross-Country and Track Scholarship
in the USA, where she completed her Masters degree. Her highlight
there was winning the America East Championships 1000m. |
Tim has a sports and exercise science
degree. He has been interested in athletics and running for the last
ten years, competing for Bristol & West AC and his university
team at both local and national levels, gaining a medal at the AAAs
3000m steeplechase and a podium position at the English Schools Championships
at 400m hurdles. Tim brings a wealth of knowledge to the team with
his in-depth understanding of the physical, physiological and bio-mechanical
aspects of running, his direct sports shoe retail experience and technical
experience with a major manufacturer of running shoes. |
Nick's wife Christine and daughter Alice also work in our store. Alice
is currently training to be a physiotherapist in Brighton but will grace
us with her very helpful and knowledgeable presence during university
holidays.

Shoe Recycling
We now accept your old shoes for recycling, to support the Variety Club children's charity. Those shoes in adequate condition are sold to third world countries where they are 'refurbished' and resold locally. Not only does this help to create third world employment but it also raises funds for sick and disadvantaged children in the UK. Obviously, this in turn reduces the amount of non-biodegradable waste going into our landfills. More information

Mizuno Inspire
As I have always ran in Puma running shoes I was reluctant to try a new running brand but after going on the gait analysis at Up & Running the Mizuno Inspire was looking to be 'my shoe'. The first thing I always notice when running in a new pair of shoes is the great cushioning. I must admit I had got quite attached to my last pair and had forgot how I was almost running in barefoot due to the lack of cushioning left in my shoes! The Mizuno Inspire's were more than comfortable. On days where I knew I would be going to the gym straight after Uni I would wear them all day at lectures. I would sometimes look down to check I hadn't walked out the house with my slippers on!
So to summarise I am glad I gave another running brand a chance to impress me and this shoe certainly did. When running they feel light, breathable and supportive and when I get home I'm tempted to keep them on for the rest of the day!

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8
As someone recently returning to regular running, I thought I’d try and sap a few more miles out of my old trainers ...
And I did, with the result of aching knees and knotted calves. Good running shoes are essential to healthy running – every time your foot hits the ground, the impact is equivalent to approximately four times your body weight and without proper cushioning, this can lead to niggles and injury. Knowing this and being a moderate over-pronater, I decided to try out Brook’s Adrenaline GTS 8’s and noticed an immediate difference. Although not a particularly cushioned shoe, they still allowed me to run on roads in comfort and based on comprehensive gait analysis, they corrected my over pronation brilliantly. You can actually feel the responsiveness that the forefoot HydroFlow system provides, and the diagonal roll bar effectively counteracts the pronation whilst allowing you to maintain a natural gait cycle. All in all, a great shoe and one that I'd be happy to recommend.
Buy this shoe if: you over-pronate and want a high quality and firm but responsive shoe.

Having run competitively for over a decade, I am sad to say I have only just discovered sports massage. As you can imagine, your muscles get a little tired of being put through their paces so often, and can become seriously tense and knotted. I have always suffered with muscular pain in my back, shoulders and neck but just accepted it as part and parcel of running so much. However, it got pretty serious recently and so I finally succumbed to the idea of sports massage. Having heard good things, I went along to Pure Health & Fitness in Stoke Bishop. Pure is essentially a Personal Trainer gym but two of the trainers, Chris and Kirsty, are also fully qualified in sports massage. Being my first massage, I appreciated that I was made to feel comfortable and relaxed - and that I was given a running commentary as to what muscles were being problematic and possibilities as to why. It was not as I had expected, a horrifically painful experience (!) and although my muscles were a little tender the following day, I felt immeasurably better in the days to follow. Not only that but the rates at Pure are reasonable; needless to say, I will be returning. I would recommend this to everyone who has sore/tense muscles prior to, during or after exercise - or even to those who don't have have any trouble - it's definitely worth using massage as a preventative method rather than as a cure.
