Nick Rose
is well known in Bristol,
mostly thanks to his long and successful career as one of Britain's
greatest runners. Not only has Nick competed twice at the Olympics,
taken Bronze in the World Cross Country Championships and Silver in
the Commonwealth Games but he also still holds the British record
for the Half Marathon, with a time of 61.03. His love of running led
him to the USA for several years, where he was able to focus on running
as a career - in which he was incredibly successful. He returned to
England in 1984 and settled in Bristol with his wife Christine, and
their two children. His passion for the sport has continued and whilst
Nick still occasionally competes, his involvement in the running community
has gone beyond his own achievements, with much of the last 15 years
being devoted to coaching young athletes. Gary Davenport is our new Assistant Manager.
He has a BSc in Sports Biology and an impressive log of results for both Track and Cross Country running.
Over the past 4 years, he has represented GB numerous times – the World Cross, European Cross and
World Junior Track Champs to name but a few. Inter Counties U20 Cross Country Champion, Gary is also
ranked 3rd in Europe for 1500m, with a time of 3.44.01. This time has gained him a place on the list of
All Time Fastest U20 1500m times.
Rick has been running for over 20
years and is well known on the local running scene as coach, team
manager and competitor for local clubs Westbury Harriers and Bristol
& West AC. During his running career he has enjoyed success in
winning the National Veterans Road Relay title with Westbury Harriers
and whilst in Germany winning 5K and 10K titles and the German half
marathon team championships. He continues to compete and works with
youngsters to encourage and support their interest in the sport.
Sarah is manager of the store and
has been running competitively for 12 years. She started out racing
at school events and was spotted by Nick Rose and Harry Clayton, who
thereafter coached her as part of Bristol AC. The girls team was highly
successful, both in cross country and track, winning several regional
and national championships. Individually, Sarah won several County
and Midlands championships and twice gained podium positions at the
English Schools Championships. Having attained a degree at the University
of Bath, she then accepted a two year Cross-Country and Track Scholarship
in the USA, where she completed her Masters degree. Her highlight
there was winning the America East Championships 1000m.
Nick's wife Christine and daughter Alice also work in our store.
Alice is currently training to be a physiotherapist in Brighton but will grace
us with her very helpful and knowledgeable presence during university
holidays.
Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8
Being an everyday runner leaves me little time to 'bed' in my new shoes. The great flexibility offered by the Brooks Adrenaline allowed me to dash off in them the moment I stepped out the shop door! As Bristol is full of hills and my legs need to survive a great deal of pounding, cushioning has always been vital for me. The resiliency of the Mogo midsole allowed the full impact to be absorbed and made my legs feel light and refreshed throughout my run.
All in all I feel this shoe offers great stability and an excellent amount of cushioning. Reviewed by Nick Rose, November 2008
Brooks Cascadia
this is an out-and-out trail running shoe with enough cushioning to run miles and miles on the road without any problem; it really is a little bit of everything for everybody. It has the same unique and wonderful fit that epitomise all Brooks' shoes. Fitting "like a glove" doesn’t describe it, it fits more like a sock that’s been crafted by only the finest tailor on Saville Row. The grip the outsole gives you on twisty, muddy, treacherous terrain is marvellous even on wet, slippery surfaces thanks to the HPR Green technology. It gives you a confidence in putting your foot down that other shoes don’t – like a post-it note it’ll stay there, gripping, until you don’t need it to anymore. Peel it away from the ground with all the responsiveness of a road shoe and you can stick it to the floor again knowing it’ll do the same thing over and over again. It really is a fabulous shoe. The unique Pivot system keeps your foot in contact with the ground on the most uneven of surfaces, whilst the Ballistic Rock Shield dissipates the shock of landing on any rocks or stones. If shoes (off-road or not) had idols, deities or objects of admiration this shoe would certainly be in the hierarchy of their affections. Reviewed by Tim, October 2008
Mizuno Inspire
As I have always run in Puma running shoes I was reluctant to try a new running brand, but after going on the gait analysis at Up & Running the Mizuno Inspire was looking to be 'my shoe'. The first thing I always notice when running in a new pair of shoes is the great cushioning. I must admit I had got quite attached to my last pair and had forgotten how I was almost running in barefoot due to the lack of cushioning left in my shoes! The Mizuno Inspires were more than comfortable. On days where I knew I would be going to the gym straight after Uni I would wear them all day at lectures. I would sometimes look down to check I hadn't walked out of the house with my slippers on!
So to summarise I am glad I gave another running brand a chance to impress me and this shoe certainly did. When running they feel light, breathable and supportive and when I get home I'm tempted to keep them on for the rest of the day. Reviewed by Alice, June 2008

Having run competitively for over a decade, I am sad to say I have only just discovered sports massage. As you can imagine, your muscles get a little tired of being put through their paces so often, and can become seriously tense and knotted. I have always suffered with muscular pain in my back, shoulders and neck but just accepted it as part and parcel of running so much. However, it got pretty serious recently and so I finally succumbed to the idea of sports massage. Having heard good things, I went along to Pure Health & Fitness in Stoke Bishop. Pure is essentially a Personal Trainer gym but two of the trainers, Chris and Kirsty, are also fully qualified in sports massage. Being my first massage, I appreciated that I was made to feel comfortable and relaxed - and that I was given a running commentary as to what muscles were being problematic and possibilities as to why. It was not as I had expected, a horrifically painful experience (!) and although my muscles were a little tender the following day, I felt immeasurably better in the days to follow. Not only that but the rates at Pure are reasonable; needless to say, I will be returning. I would recommend this to everyone who has sore/tense muscles prior to, during or after exercise - or even to those who don't have have any trouble - it's definitely worth using massage as a preventative method rather than as a cure. www.purehf.co.uk Reviewed by Sarah, March 2008
