With Phil departing to the new Aylesbury shop, Ryan
has taken over as manager at Watford.
Ryan is a runner of huge experience, despite his youthful demeanour!
With 13 Marathons and 9 Ultramarathons under his belt, including the
Comrades Marathon & London - Brighton, undoubtedly his finest
hour (or 41 hours and 2 minutes more precisely!) came last year when
he completed the gruelling 145 mile non-stop Grand
Union Canal Race in appalling conditions. Ryan has running in
his blood and will be happy to help you whether you're running your
first 5K or your first Ultra!!!
Lucy joined the Up & Running team in May 2008
and will be working at both the Aylesbury and Watford stores.
Lucy started running when she was very young, following in her mother's footsteps - she too was an athlete who competed in the pentathlon and
she has a few Commonweath medals, as well as competing at two Olympic games.
Lucy herself is a sprinter, competing at the 100m and 200m
as well as long jump and hurdles and has competed for Great Britain around 20 times.
She has been to many major junior championships - 2 world junior championships, 2 European junior championships, the world youth championships and the
Commonweath youth championships. Her greatest achievements are placing 6th at the world youth championships in the 100m in 2005 and placing 1st at the
European junior championships in the 4x100m relay in the summer of 2007. She trains 6 days a week and is aiming to compete at the Olympics.
She enjoys all sorts of running and even as a sprinter, has recently been going for runs in the morning!
Derek lives in Pitstone near Leighton Buzzard and is a member of Vale of Aylesbury and has lived in the local area all of his life. He has been running competitively for over the 30 years with PBs set in the 1980s including 10K - 32.55, 10miles - 54.41 and Marathon 2.38. He is still regularly competing as an Over-60 Veteran in Multi Terrain events and road races up to Half Marathon with a wish to do one last marathon. Currently running 6 days per week including projects such as the Thames Path, Ridgeway and Chiltern Way in manageable sections during the coming months.
Mat has grown up participating in many sports including playing county cricket for several years and being part of a British ski acadamy.
After competing in a wide range of sports he decided to concentrate on athletics at the age of 18. Although Javelin is his strongest event, he has chosen to specialise in the decathlon. Mat gained his first British vest indoors in 2007 in the heptathlon and went on to compete for Great Britain outdoors in the decthlon as well as England in both the decathlon and the javelin. He is currently studying sport science at Brunel university and trains 6 days a week with a variety of coaches, which as of June 2008 is headed by Olympic decathlete Greg Richards and includes olympic hurdles finalist Hughie Teape. Mat hopes to achieve his potential in the decathlon and represent Great Britain in an Olympic games.
Watch out for bios soon for Liz, and
Stephanie.

FAQ - some common questions answered
- What is gait analysis?
- 'Gait' is essentially the scientific name for walking or running so a gait analysis is an analysis of your running or walking pattern. This is done by videoing your gait whilst you walk or run on a treadmill and then analysing it with our Dartfish® software.
- Do I have to book an appointment for a gait analysis?
- No. Gait analysis is available Monday to Friday 10am – 5:30pm and Saturday 9am – 5pm.
- Is gait analysis free?
- Yes, assuming you purchase shoes from us. If not, it is also available on request for a fee of £20, which is redeemable against future footwear purchases.
- What is the best time to come into the store?
- Come in whenever is most convenient for you. Saturdays are generally the busier days, but we also have more staff in on Saturday. If you do come in at a particularly busy time, please bear with us and we will get to you as quickly as we can.
- How long does gait analysis take?
- Gait analysis itself is a relatively short process, but you need to allow yourself at least 20-30 mins to have the analysis and the shoe fitting.
- What is the average price of your shoes?
- The average price of shoe in the shop is about £75 and most of our shoes range between £70 and £85, although we do have some shoes at less than £60 and some over £100. We don't generally recommend shoes under £60 as they don't tend to have forefoot cushioning which is an important consideration for running even short distances. However, we will always do our best to work to your budget.
- Which shoe brands do you sell?
- Asics, Brooks, Mizuno, New Balance and Saucony are our main road running brands. We also stock off-road shoes by Inov-8 and Salomon. We do not stock either Nike or Adidas. All of our shoes are high quality, technical, specialised shoes designed for running. Despite what anyone might tell you, there is no one brand that is 'better' than another and none of our staff have any favouritism towards one brand over another.
- What is the difference between a neutral shoe and a stability shoe?
- A stability shoe has a section on the inside of the shoe called a 'medial post' made from a firmer midsole material. This offers a bit more resistance and controls the extent of the inward roll of the foot (pronation).
- What is your returns policy?
- We recommend that you first try the shoes on a treadmill or wear them around the house for a few days and contact us as soon as possible if you have any problems or queries. It is very difficult to exchange shoes which have been worn outside, but we are here to help you after you leave the shop as well as while you're here so please let us know if you have any concerns.
- How long does a pair of shoes last?
- Most running shoes are designed to stand up to around 500 miles worth of running on average. As a guide, if you run 10 miles a week, that's approximately a year. At 20 miles a week, they'll need replacing roughly every six months. It's important to renew them when they wear out, as worn out shoes greatly increase the risk of injury due to loss of cushioning and technical function
- Can I wear my trail shoes on the road?
- Trail shoes and fell shoes are specifically designed for paths, grass or muddy terain and consequently, they often have less cushioning than a road running shoe. You won't get the same level of cushioning and support on the roads wearing trail or fell shoes so if you run on the road, get a road shoe. There are now some hybrid shoes which we stock which will cope with both roads and trails. Please advise us of your requirements when you come in and we can help you to find the ideal shoe for your running.
- Other than shoes, what else do you sell?
- Quite a bit. We stock lots of apparel - shorts, tights, thermals, waterproof jackets, vests, t-shirts, crop tops and loads more. We also have a very wide range of accessories – socks (an important part of your running kit, often overlooked!), watches and heart rate monitors, High5 and SIS sports supplements, sports bras, water bottles, caps, running pouches and loads more!
- Do you sell gift vouchers?
- Yes. We sell gift vouchers of any denomination which make an ideal gift!
