" ...I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road, and when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the
end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured since I run
this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did I ran clear across Alabama. For
no particular reason, I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured since I'd gone this
far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured since I've gone this far, I
might as well just turn back, keep right on going. When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go,
you know, I went..."

Brooks Adrenaline 8, tester Richard
Now in its eighth model, the Adrenaline is proving to be one of the top anti pronation shoes on the market. The shoe weighs in at 326g and is a great training shoe. The shoe uses the Brooks hydro flow gel in the heel and new Brooks MOGO cushioning system in the forefoot, this coupled with DRB (diagonal rollbar) support makes for a great shoe for any moderate to high over pronaters. It has a very durable outsole using high performance rubber (HPR™) which I have found to last longer than other brands over 500 + miles (expected life span of shoe) of running. Although this is designed as a road shoe this works well offroad in spring and summer but does not have quite enough grip to perform aswell on muddy or icing conditions in winter. It is a relatively broad fit and so is good for anyone who requires a wide fitting shoe. Coming in at £80.00, it is a good price point for such a supportive shoe and equals most other brands for price. Although not designed as a water proof / resistant shoe in any way. I have found it does take a very heavy downpour to get your feet soggy. I have been wearing Brooks Adrenaline through many incarnations as my training shoe for around 8 years and have had no problems. I will continue to buy this shoe as long as it is produced.
Mizuno Wave Kaze III spike, tester Richard
If like me you agree to getting up on a freezing Sunday winter morning and running through unnecessarily muddy fields then this is the cross country shoe for you. This is a great lightweight cross country spike that comes in at 220g. It has a rubber forefoot spike plate which allows for use in cross-country and / or indoor and outside track as well. Like all Mizuno shoes, the KAZE makes good use of the wave plate technology providing great heel and forefoot cushioning. The shoe comes equiped with 9mm standard cross spikes and longer 12mm and 15mm spikes (sold separately @ £1.99) can be used depending on how muddy the course conditions are. For track you would need to use 5mm or 6mm spikes (also sold separately @ £1.99). This is great cushioned spike whether for cross country or for track. It also offers very mild support with the use of the parallel wave plate. Coming in at £50 this is also a great value xc running spike. The only down side is having to clean them after the race. As with all running footwear it is not recommended to machine wash but to hand wash.

Local Runs
Richard has plotted a 10k training route
at WalkJogRun.net, click here.
A great area to run in York is just by the river. Starting just by Cliffords Tower you can cross over the road by the river onto a foot / cycle path, hidden by an avenue of trees, you can follow this path (provided it's not flooded of course) for about 1 mile. You can then cross the Millenium bridge and either follow the foot / cycle path to the race course area which can take in any number of routes and distances including a clear route all the way to Selby (roughly 14 miles, for anyone doing marathon training). Alternatively you can take a right along Terry Avenue which runs the full length of this side of the river. For added km / mile you can take in Rowntree Park. Just be careful of slipping on geese & duck desposits while circling the pond or you might find yourself doing an aquathon. You can then exit the park area back onto Terry Avenue where you can join Skeldergate bridge back over river back to Cliffords Tower. This loop will nicely come in at around 5km. A lovely traffic free route (which is no easy task in York) and largely well lit for dark winter evenings.
For more options in the area why not try goodrunguide.co.uk, for a very reasonable price of £10 a year, you can access this fairly new site for good routes, plotting your own runs, all accurately measured.
Happy Running!
