Richard began running in 1999 to get fit ... and has since completed 11 marathons and numerous half marathons with a PB of 2h42:11 at London. He has a 5km PB of 15.59, half marathon of 1.11 and a 33 minute 10km. His technical expertise in shoe fitting is as unstoppable as his desire to run. Darran is the Assistant Manager and brings over 32 years of experience, both as an elite runner and also as a top coach. He is a registered UK Athletics Coach as well as a Coach Tutor. So when it comes to advice on training, kit and injury management, Darran is as informed as he is enthusiastic! Darran won his age group trophy in the 2011 London Marathon for the 5th consecutive year and one month later was invited to test-run the 2012 Olympic Marathon. And although he has represented Great Britain on numerous occasions cross country and on the road, he is a strong believer that running is an easy to access sport for everyone, no matter what your standard... everyone has to start somewhere Andy is a middle distance speacialist, but has recently moved up in distance to the 10k and marathon: he completed his first marathon, finishing in under 4 hours (3.58.22) at Brighton this year. Having run a p.b. for 10k of 43.13, he hopes to break the 40 minute mark in the near future. When not running Andy is also a keen musician, playing in and around the York area.

Informed opinion from our knowledgable staff and key customers ... Aspex Nile sunglassesAspex sunglasses are reasonably priced shades starting at around £17, including high quality lenses and very flexible and comfotable polymer frames. The particular pair I have worn for a couple of London Marathons (plus other races) are the 'Nile' model (retailing at £25), a slim-fitting shade with interchangeable lenses (they come with dark lenses and yellow lenses for the Winter). They are comfortable, have nose and ear pads so they don't rub and also because they are so light and well fitted, they don't bounce. The price also incudes travel pouches that double as lense cleaners. The range come in the slim-fit and classic-fit, depending on the size required. Review by Darran, Sep 2011 Saucony ProGrid KinvaraYou could easily be mistaken in to thinking that such a light weight shoe (men's 218g, women's 190g) is only appropiate for short races. But the Kinvara has been designed to offer enough cushioning for longer runs and general speed work. Review by Darran, July 2011 Inov-8 Flyroc 310
This is a well cusioned off-road shoe, that goes beyond trail running. It is equally at home whilst Nordic Walking on trails as it is on the fells or on forest trails. I've worn them on runs from Pickering, through the fields (pretty muddy!) into Dalby Forest and along trails, both slippery and hard packed surfaces. To summarise, the Flyroc 310 is a well cusioned, versatile off road shoe that offers good protection over distance. With a broad fit and fantastic grip, it dries quickly when wet (due to its high wicking upper) and is suitable for events such as off road marathons Review by Darran, 2011 More Product Reviews from this shopBrooks Glycerin 8With the Glycerin 8, Brooks have introduced their new DNA which together with BioMoGo, the DNA speads the pressure in the best way possible in that it adjusts itself to meet your personal needs. If it is maximum cushioning you are after then this is the shoe for you. It is suitable for anything from 5km up to marathon plus distance. Coming in at 357g it is a good weight for such a cushioned shoe. It has stayed at £95 which a good price point for such a high level shoe. As with all Brooks shoes it is very hard wearing and ideal for marathon training battering round the streets. Review by Richard, 2011 Is there a product you'd like to see reviewed here? Some local runs ...Richard has plotted a 10k training route at WalkJogRun.net, click here.
A great area to run in York is just by the river. Starting just by Cliffords Tower you can cross over the road by the river onto a foot / cycle path, hidden by an avenue of trees, you can follow this path (provided it's not flooded of course) for about 1 mile. You can then cross the Millenium bridge and either follow the foot / cycle path to the race course area which can take in any number of routes and distances including a clear route all the way to Selby (roughly 14 miles, for anyone doing marathon training). Alternatively you can take a right along Terry Avenue which runs the full length of this side of the river. For added km / mile you can take in Rowntree Park. Just be careful of slipping on geese & duck desposits while circling the pond or you might find yourself doing an aquathon. You can then exit the park area back onto Terry Avenue where you can join Skeldergate bridge back over river back to Cliffords Tower. This loop will nicely come in at around 5km. A lovely traffic free route (which is no easy task in York) and largely well lit for dark winter evenings. Local RacesHave a look at Future NE England races - Barry Cornelius's site with links to races and results in the NE. And drop into the shop for the latest race information and entry leaflets - if you're a race organiser let us know your race details. |
